I've been playing Driftwood for the past few days and have been having a ton of fun with it. The game launches later today, June 1st, in Early Access, and I'm going to go over everything you need to know about it. My own gameplay footage is not the best quality for some reason, so I'm going to be mixing that with some trailer footage. You play as a sloth named Eddie as he embarks on a high-speed downhill longboarding adventure. Driftwood has this beautiful and mesmerizing painterly style, which works great because the background ends up blurring quite a lot as you fly down these hills. But your experience might look a little more like this when you first start the game, and that's okay. Getting the hang of riding and learning to balance speed and control has been a fun and rewarding challenge. And speaking of challenges, each map has a few different objectives to complete at your own speed. No pressure here. There's no story or anything, but there is this very cool mini-map you can use to select your level. It's honestly almost as fun as the main game. Driftwood will be launching with four maps, but the pre-release version I've been playing only has 3, along with the tutorial area. And there are plans to add even more content during the early access period, which I'll go into a little later. My favorite map is definitely the wide open vineyard hills, which has some pretty fun shortcuts throughout these stone ruins. And there are actually a ton of shortcuts in each area, which was an unexpected surprise. These make each run a little bit different and open up some new possibilities for both high score and high speed runs. As the name Driftwood implies, drifting is something you'll have to master if you want to compete for high scores in the game's leaderboards. And the more points you get and objectives you unlock, the more cosmetic items and board upgrades you'll earn. The various board and wheel types actually do have a pretty big effect on gameplay, with the penny board being the easiest to control. However, it's not unlocked from the beginning, so you'll have to get comfortable with some of the other boards and see what works best for you. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even try out the Sticks of Butter wheels. No matter which setup you go with though, Driftwood still feels like a very satisfying longboarding game, whether you're in the mood for competing or maybe something a little more relaxed. My favorite thing I've discovered is stringing together a bunch of 180 drift spins, which looks absolutely ridiculous, but it's a pretty good way to rack up points. However, if you do this too much, then your run will be considered a cheese run and won't appear on the game's leaderboards. Which is kind of funny. Okay, now that you know what to expect gameplay-wise, I want to talk about the team behind Driftwood and what their plans for early access are. Stoat Sloth Interactive is currently a team of just two people, an artist and a programmer. They plan on keeping the game in early access for at least another six months or until they feel that the amount of content is just right for a full release. The gameplay will stay pretty much the same, so the main additions will be more cosmetic items and more maps, which is great because Driftwood already feels wonderful to play. Finally, the game will increase in price once it launches in full, so if you want to support the developers early on, now's the best time to jump into the game. I believe the regular early access price is going to be around $12, with a 20% launch discount going live today. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this one to anyone looking for a meditative high-speed experience. I know that's a little bit of a contradiction, but I think it's the best way to describe this game. I'm really looking forward to trying out the new map later today and all the other areas that Stoked Sloth adds in the future. If you decide to check the game out, you can also find the devs on Twitter as well as join their Discord server to give feedback, post your high scores, or just hang out. And that's all from me today. If you're looking for some more cool games like this, then I have just the video for you. you
